NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR NANOTECHNOLOGY

NINT Logo

Established in 2001, the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) is funded and operated jointly by the National Research Council (NRC), the Province of Alberta and the University of Alberta. NINT is an integrated, multidisciplinary institution involving researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, informatics, pharmacy and medicine. Dr. Dan Wayner is the Acting Director-General of NINT.

Located on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, NINT's upcoming 12,000 square-metre research and industry partnership/incubation facility is designed to accommodate 150 permanent staff; up to 45 guest workers from industry and universities; and training opportunities for some 275 graduate and post-doctoral researchers.

SMALL TRANSLATES INTO BIG IN THE NANO WORLD

Nanotechnology is a collective term that describes the emerging ability to study and manipulate matter atom-by-atom and molecule-by-molecule. This ability has enabled the discovery of fundamentally new structures that exhibit revolutionary new properties in fields as diverse as manufacturing, computers, medicine and communications.

Nanotechnology offers many opportunities for Alberta companies to create profitable new products and ventures in such diverse fields as Life Sciences, Information and Communications Technologies and Energy.

Edmonton is already capitalizing on the “cluster” effect nano-expertise that helped attract NINT to the city. This fall, both Micralyne, a U of A spinoff and NINT supporter, and nanoresearcher Dr. Michael Brett received ASTech Awards for their work in microfabrication and nanotechnology.

AMBITIOUS AGENDA FOR NINT STARTUP

NINT's goal for 2002-2007 is to be recognized internationally for excellence in research and innovation and as Canada's flagship nanotechnology institute.

In September, NINT opened its new offices and lab at the University of Alberta. The sixth floor of the …building will provide a home for NINT the permanent quarters are built.

In October 2002, the first NINT researchers were appointed. These six University of Alberta faculty will hold cross-appointments to the Institute’s research staff.

Experts from Canada, the United States and Europe met in Edmonton in October 2002 for a symposium on integrating the macro world with the new nano world.

In November NINT’s Acting Director General Dr. Dan Wayner was elected to the Royal Society of Canada for his groundbreaking, seminal research in electrochemical and laser-induced photoacoustic calorimetry as well as his applications of physical organic expertise to the modification of semiconductor surfaces.

NINT A PROUD SPONSOR OF INNOVATION ALBERTA

Nanotechnology is an exciting new frontier for scientists, let alone the public. Applications resulting from nanoscale research will revolutionize many areas of the economy, including manufacturing and health. NINT looks to its collaboration with the Innovation Alberta Omnimedia Project as an effective means to communicate better understanding of nanotechnology among the public.
